ATHENA House: Female Veteran Transitional Housing Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The ATHENA House is a safe, secure, drug and alcohol free (DRY) housing with 24 hour supervision by support staff. It is a 16-bed facility designed to provide safe and stable housing to homeless female veterans who are eligible for this service-related benefit. ATHENA offers up to 24-months of housing with a focus on increasing income so that they may re-enter the community in an independent setting. We also provide assistance to access entitlements, employment, health care, counseling, transportation, and basic needs. The program is staffed 24/7/365. The ATHENA House works closely with the James A. Haley and Bay Pines VA Hospitals in coordinating access to this program as well as other veteran serving organizations. The ATHENA House also works closely with Tampa Crossroads' Veterans Assistance Center to help clients achieve employment and housing goals. This Grant per diem program is the first in Florida to offer gender sensitive housing for female veterans.

DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES:
The primary goal of the ATHENA House is to assist the clients become stable, independent, productive, and healthy members of their community. Clients may receive counseling and case management to address their substance abuse problems and/or their mental illness, to learn the life skills necessary to function independently, to address educational goals, and to find and retain full time employment or access entitled government benefits needed to support permanent independent living. Individual and group counseling sessions are available to all clients.

This is a 24 month GPD Program. Must be a female veteran approved for housing benefits by V.A. Must be a homeless female veteran qualified for V.A. housing benefits. Stay up to 24 months. Resident must pay 30% max income.

The Grant Per Diem (GPD) program offers supportive housing (up to 24 months) to homeless Veterans with substance use, mental illness or dual diagnosis problems. There are 3 agencies where beds are located which include ACTS, Volunteers of America and Tampa Crossroads. Each agency has their own entry requirements and processing.

Program Fees:

Residents pay 30% of monthly income towards rent.

Eligibility:

Single, homeless female veterans can be referred and assessed for admission into ATHENA House. Residents must be capable of and willing to obtain full time employment, unless they receive benefits which require that they do not engage in employment. Proof of military service and confirmation of benefit is required by the VA prior to acceptance into the program.

Grant Per Diem - Must be a veteran with at least one active day of service past basic training.
